The study aimed to systematically synthesize the scientific evidence relating remuneration, incentives, and performance, particularly within the sanitation sector. To this end, a qualitative systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. A search of Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and Latindex identified relevant literature published between 2010 and 2026, generating an analytical corpus organized into five thematic categories. The results show an evolution from administrative approaches to salary toward strategic and multivariate conceptions of compensation, as well as a moderate-to-high empirical consensus on its positive relationship with job performance. However, heterogeneous effects, relevant psychosocial mediations, limited integration of advanced analytics, and low research density in the sanitation sector were identified. It is concluded that the field is transitioning toward strategic and data-driven compensation models, the consolidation of which requires further longitudinal evidence and specific studies of the sanitation sector.
